US Imposes Up to $20,000 Visa Bond on 50 Countries

The US has introduced a visa bond of up to $20,000 for B1/B2 applicants from 50 countries, while Indian passport holders remain exempt.

US Visa Bond Requirement for B1 B2 Visa Applicants
The US Visa Bond requires some B1/B2 applicants from designated countries to post $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 before visa issuance.

The United States has introduced a new US visa bond requirement for certain B1/B2 visitor visa applicants from 50 countries. Depending on the applicant, the bond can be set at $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000.

Indian passport holders are currently exempt from the requirement, meaning the new measure does not add this financial condition to applications for a US visa for Indians.

What Is the US Visa Bond?

The new visa bond is a financial requirement aimed at addressing concerns around visa overstays. Applicants from designated countries may be required to post a bond before receiving a B1/B2 visitor visa.

The bond can be:

  • $10,000
  • $15,000
  • $20,000

The amount is determined during the visa process by a US consular officer. Applicants who are required to post a bond must follow the designated payment and documentation process.

However, paying the bond does not guarantee visa approval. Applicants must still meet the applicable requirements for a B1/B2 visa.

Which Countries Are Subject to the US Visa Bond?

The programme covers 50 countries, with implementation taking place in phases. Countries on the designated list include Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Venezuela, Cuba, Algeria, Angola, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Zimbabwe and Uganda, among others.

India is not currently included in the list.

For Indian applicants, the America visa requirements for Indian citizens therefore remain separate from this new bond requirement. The bond does not replace or change the standard eligibility requirements for obtaining a US visitor visa.

How Much Is the US Visa Bond?

Eligible applicants may be required to post a bond of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000, depending on the determination made during their visa application.

The bond is separate from regular visa application costs and does not provide an automatic route to visa approval.

Applicants should also not voluntarily make a bond payment unless they have received specific instructions as part of their visa process.

Does the Visa Bond Affect Green Card Applicants?

The new measure is focused on certain B1/B2 visitor visa applicants and does not directly change the rules for a United States Green Card.

It also does not introduce a new requirement for people pursuing US permanent residency through employment, family or other existing immigration categories.

Similarly, the announcement does not itself change Green Card processing time for employment-based or family-based applicants.

For professionals exploring pathways such as EB-1A, the visitor visa bond should therefore be viewed separately from the requirements for employment-based immigration. Anyone considering an EB-1A best immigration consultant should evaluate their profile against the specific eligibility and evidence requirements for that pathway rather than treating visitor visa rules as part of the Green Card process.

The US visa bond represents another change in the country's visa screening framework, but its immediate impact is limited to nationals of the designated countries. Indian applicants remain exempt from the bond at present.

For official information on US visa requirements and current visa policies, applicants should refer to the U.S. Department of State.
