US Visa Wait Times for Indians Reach 12 Months
US visa wait times for Indians remain high, with B1/B2 appointments reaching 12 months in Hyderabad. Check city-wise timelines for student and work visas.
B1/B2 Visa Appointments Take Up to 12 Months
Indian applicants continue to face long US visa wait times, with B1/B2 visitor visa appointments taking up to 12 months at some US consulates. The latest US Department of State data, updated September 17, shows significant differences in appointment availability across Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi.
How Long Is the US Visa Wait?
For B1/B2 visitor visas, Hyderabad currently has the longest listed wait for the next available appointment, followed by Mumbai and New Delhi:
- Hyderabad: 12 months
- Mumbai: 11.5 months
- New Delhi: 10 months
- Chennai: 7.5 months
- Kolkata: 6.5 months
The State Department also publishes average wait times for applicants where the next available appointment is more than three months away.
What Are the Wait Times for Student and Work Visas?
The picture is considerably different for student and exchange visas. Applicants for F, M and J visas currently face much shorter waits:
- Chennai: Less than 0.5 month
- Hyderabad: 1.5 months
- Kolkata: 2 months
- New Delhi: 2 months
- Mumbai: 2.5 months
For petition-based H, L, O, P and Q visas, the listed waits range from 1 month in Kolkata to 5.5 months in Hyderabad. The State Department groups these categories together, so the figures do not represent separate H-1B visa status or O-1 processing time estimates.
Why Are US Visa Waits So Long?
The latest figures show that appointment availability varies substantially by visa category and consular post. B1/B2 applicants currently face the longest waits, while student and exchange visa appointments are available much sooner.
For Indians planning a US visa, the timelines are therefore not uniform across categories. Students should separately check the latest F1 visa processing time, while applicants should also review the specific America visa requirements for Indian citizens that apply to their category.
When Will US Visa Wait Times Improve?
There is currently no fixed date for a broad improvement in appointment availability. The State Department says embassies and consulates release additional appointment slots regularly, and applicants who already have appointments can check for earlier openings.
The published wait times are updated monthly and are estimates rather than guarantees.
